Obtenga más información sobre Legends of Trivia, llegando a Xbox en el Jackbox Party Pack 11

The Jackbox Party Pack 11 is coming to Xbox this fall, and we can’t wait for everyone to see what we’ve been working on! We have five, completely new games in this package, including a Joke Writing Game, a cozy drawing game, a sound effects game, a social deduction game, and a trivia role-playing game, called Trivia Legends!

Trivia Legends is the new trivia game from Jackbox, with a touch of fantasy! In this new title arriving in The Jackbox Party Pack 11, work cooperatively with your team to defeat monsters and villains by answering trivia questions correctly while trying to prevent the enemies from advancing!

We recently spoke with some of the Trivia Legends development team, including the game director, Warren Arnold, the lead artist, Héctor Padilla, and the audio lead, Nate Sandberg.

How does Trivia Legends work and how does it differ from other Jackbox games you’ve worked on before?

Warren Arnold: Players receive a trivia question that, when answered correctly, deals damage to a monster. However, incorrect answers allow the monster to attack the players. Players work as a team to face increasingly challenging monsters and accumulate as many points as possible to be deemed «legendary.»

Trivia Legends is definitely one of the largest games we’ve made due to the amount of action, animation, and balance required for this game to come to life.

How did the team decide on the world in which this game exists?

Héctor Padilla: I actually created the first iteration of the game a few years ago! It was my first prototype. I was happy with how it turned out, and it went pretty far in the development process. People seemed to like it! Eventually, we put the idea on hold because there were still a lot of unanswered questions about the design.

Then, recently, Nate (Sandberg, Jackbox Audio Lead) randomly asked me to send him all the notes and designs I had accumulated during that development process, and he formed a small team that successfully got the green light to make the trivia-RPG game we’re working on now. It took many years to get here!

What are some inspirations for the art and audio? What has been easy or challenging in designing Trivia Legends‘ art and audio?

Nate Sandberg: The 8-bit music in the Final Fantasy franchise, composed by Nobuo Uematsu, left a hard impression on me. The analog synths arpeggiated, the earworm melodies, and the bass lines in that soundtrack define fantasy and RPG music for me. I tried to bring some of that sound into Trivia Legends. I blended analog sounds with more traditional fantasy genre instruments like lute, bodhran, Irish whistle, cello, and trombone (the instrument I actually play).

I had a clear idea of how the music should sound in this game, but it was much more serious and sometimes intense than many other Jackbox games. So one challenge has been balancing that intensity while bringing humor into the game’s sound design. I ended up using some classic cartoon sound effects for monsters and characters to make things more fun and Jackbox-y, and I added a harp and a double bass for some fun.

Héctor: Yes, I was a Final Fantasy fan like Nate too. More than anything, I’m a student (or should I say graduate?) of the School of Ken Sugimori, who was the main visual designer of the Pokémon franchise since its inception. His artwork has always been a huge influence on me. Character design comes more naturally to me, but the user interface and layouts are always a struggle.

Do you have a favorite character you created for this game and why?

Héctor: I grew to love Azura, the princess’s mage because I worked on many of her animations. I really had to connect with the magical girl inside me. Also, Bingo, the mischievous jester! People need to stop being afraid of clowns!

Do you have a favorite audio moment in the game? Why is it your favorite?

Nate: I think my favorite audio moment is the sound design for the Ogre Boss. Héctor created this huge ogre riding a little donkey. I had a lot of fun creating sounds for those animations. I used cartoon-inspired xylophones and squeaky toys for the donkey, which creates a hilarious contrast with the deep ogre sounds.

What do you hope players experience or feel based on the game’s art and audio?

Héctor: I hope players feel really immersed in the game. I want them to feel like the choices they make are meaningful, where the movements they make actually hit or the avatar they choose truly fits the character they want for the game within 20 minutes.

Nate: I hope the music and sound design inspire a sense of story and nostalgia. And I hope some of the melodies stick with players like those classic RPG tunes. Trivia Legends, along with the other five completely new games, are arriving in The Jackbox Party Pack 11 this fall on Xbox!
