Otro gran nombre de la industria se baja del barco: El director de Sea of Thieves y Banjo-Kazooie abandona RARE y a Xbox

RARE has been one of the studios most affected by Microsoft’s recent layoffs. While it didn’t fare as badly as the team behind Perfect Dark, one of its upcoming projects has been canceled overnight, though it seemed inevitable after a long period without official information. Reliable sources like VGC have mentioned that the cancellation of Everwild has led to the director of Sea of Thieves and Banjo-Kazooie leaving RARE after 35 years with the studio known for major releases.

Gregg Mayles, the designer behind multiple RARE releases such as Donkey Kong Country and its sequel, as well as Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Viva Piñata, and the studio’s most successful title: Sea of Thieves; took on the role of design director during the development of Everwild, one of the studio’s most enigmatic games that left many questions unanswered. According to what the VGC media has shared on its website, the veteran is about to announce his retirement from the studio after this unfortunate incident.

After 35 years, the director of Sea of Thieves and Banjo-Kazooie leaves RARE

Mayles doesn’t seem to be the only veteran leaving RARE, as executive producer Louise O’Connor, one of the creators of Conker’s Bad Fur Day for Nintendo 64, would also be ready to leave the studio with Everwild’s cancellation. Unfortunately, the Microsoft Gaming division has suffered a severe blow that has completely destabilized the plans that had been announced. A significant portion of Xbox’s most important future projects has vanished overnight, which has worried the entire community.

Currently, Microsoft Gaming studios are facing great uncertainty regarding their future projects. Divisions like Turn10 have lost 50% of their staff, as well as support teams in the Call of Duty series have also been impacted by reductions in their development forces. Only time will tell what the direction of the affected studios will be, as well as the fate of some silent projects like Contraband and Fable.
