Marcin Blacha, its main writer, has shared that originally a suicidal mission ending was considered, inspired by Mass Effect 2, where Geralt and his team would face the Wild Hunt navigating icy seas; however, they decided to choose a more intimate and personal approach for the conclusion.

Mass Effect 2 was a major inspiration for the game and even at the beginning, we had an ending inspired by Mass Effect 2: that moment when Geralt gathers a group and embarks on a suicide mission. You sailed on a Skellige drakkar toward an icy sea, and had to fight against the Wild Hunt. We redesigned it a bit and decided to give it a more personal touch.
